One of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history, this undersea megathrust earthquake struck off the coast of Sumatra on Boxing Day 2004. The resulting tsunami radiated across the Indian Ocean, striking coastlines in 14 countries from Indonesia to East Africa. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand suffered the greatest casualties, prompting the creation of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System.
