2010 Chile Earthquake
2010-02-27 — Offshore Maule Region, central Chile
The sixth-strongest earthquake ever recorded struck central Chile in the early morning, generating a tsunami that devastated coastal towns and reached as far as Japan and Russia. Despite its enormous magnitude, Chile's strict building codes developed after the 1960 Valdivia earthquake prevented far greater casualties. The earthquake shifted the city of Concepcion 3 meters to the west and shortened the length of a day by 1.26 microseconds.
