A catastrophic magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti just 25 kilometers west of Port-au-Prince, the most densely populated area of the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. The shallow depth and proximity to the capital caused massive destruction, with an estimated 250,000 residences and 30,000 commercial buildings collapsing or severely damaged. The disaster displaced 1.5 million people and prompted one of the largest international humanitarian responses in history.
